The great annual wildebeest migration is a spectacle many of us, even those who have not been on safari before, are familiar with. Courtesy of some excellent nature documentaries, we’ve been able to get up close and personal to the wildebeests as they desperately try to cross the crocodile-laden Mara River. We’ve seen them traverse a river by the hundreds, and gasped as the unlucky ones are nabbed by the swift blow of a crocodile jaw. If it’s this scintillating via television or internet, imagine how it must be in person!

Where is the great wildebeest migration?
Before jumping to the best times to see the great migration, let’s give a bit more detail on the great migration and where one can see it. Every year, around 1.5 to 2 million wildebeest, or gnu, migrate in a clockwise fashion in search of lush, green grasses as they follow the rain patterns. They start the year in Serengeti National Park, located in Tanzania, and move in a clockwise fashion up into the Masai Mara, which is found in Kenya, and then head south back into Tanzania.
Tanzania and Kenya are the two countries where one can witness this incredible event.

Wildebeest migration, Serengeti National Park

Below are the general patterns of the migration, with the caveat that nature is never entirely predictable.

The wildebeest may be the stars of the migration, but they are not the only participants. They are joined by other ungulates such as zebra, gazelles, eland and impala. The old adage ‘there’s safety in numbers’ certainly holds true here.  By traveling with other animals, the group is able to use the various strengths each animal possesses to help ensure they survive. Zebra have excellent eyesight but rely on the keen sense of hearing and smell, which their companions the wildebeest possess, to help get them from point A to point B safely.

When to see the great migration
‘When is the best time to see the great migration?’ This is the question most often asked, since the majority of people plan their safari around work or school schedules, and are left with only few months as viable contenders. Although there is no bad time to see the migration, some months may be more attractive depending on what one wishes to see. The migration also varies from year to year, and no two years are ever the same, making planning a bit tricky. Safari companies do their very best to put together an itinerary that puts you right in the middle of the migratory action, but it’s always advisable to spend several days in either the Serengeti or Masai Mara, to give your guide adequate time to locate the herd, should they not be exactly where your itinerary said they should be.

December, January, February and March
December through March sees the migration primarily in the eastern and southern areas of the Serengeti, as well as in parts of the Ngorongoro Conservation area.
January marks the start of calving season for the wildebeest, which continues through March. The start of the year is a particularly popular time for those who are keen to see the tiny faces dotted throughout the plains.
February is the start of the long rain season, which is more pronounced in eastern Tanzania. Those planning on visiting Lake Manyara and Tarangire during the Serengeti safari may wish to allow for a few extra days.

April and May
April is the peak of the long rain season and with the rains come beautiful flowers and lush green grass. It’s also low season for most hotels. Those seeking reduced prices and crowds may wish to consider visiting the Serengeti in April.  Somewhere towards the end of April to mid-May, the migration beings its journey west into central Serengeti. Central Serengeti has a wide array of lodging options and is also one of the areas where one can enjoy a hot air balloon rides.
Rut season begins sometime in March, and if you’ve never heard a wildebeest in rut, you are in for a surprise.  You only have to stop and listen and your ears will be met with a cacophony of noisy grunts that permeate the air.

June and July
By June, the migration is fully in the western corridor of the Serengeti. The Grumeti River runs through this part of the Serengeti and those who visit during this time of year will likely get to see them cross this famous river. Sometime in July, depending on how much moisture there’s been during the year, the migration starts heading north, towards Kenya. They first must pass over the Mara River, which is a haven for photographers looking for that perfect river-crossing photo.
The lodging options in northern Serengeti tend to be higher-end, and the northern part of the Serengeti  is the other area where hot air balloon rides are offered. July is the start of the dry season, and days usually bright and dry and nights can be chilly. Most northern hemisphere schools are now on summer break, so lodges tend to book up quickly.

August, September, October and November
By August, the migration is in the northern part of the Serengeti, or has crossed into the Masai Mara. These months are the peak safari months for those wishing to visit the Masai Mara. They are also peak season for hotels, which often book months in advance.
In November, the herd has normally returned back to the Serengeti or is well on its way. Depending on the year’s weather, the migration can be found in northern or central Serengeti. Come December, the herd moves back to central and eastern Serengeti and begins the cycle all over again.

Planning your safari great wildebeest migration
The great migration is often a once-in-a-lifetime event. Some may spend several years saving up for the safari of their dreams. It’s important to remember that nature is not predictable and that the migration doesn’t always move in a forward motion. Sometimes it moves in a lateral direction and sometimes in a retrograde one. No one can precisely pinpoint the location of the migration and the best way to ensure you’re able to witness this event is to allocate enough time. By giving yourself and extra day or two, you give your guide the ability to talk to other guides and to help get you there with enough time to experience the spectacle over the course of a few days.

One thing is for sure, no matter what time of year you decide to visit either of these majestic places, you will be spoiled for choice when it comes to wildlife viewing opportunities.

The Serengeti wildebeest migration

The Serengeti wildebeest migration is the movement of vast numbers of the Serengeti's wildebeest, accompanied by large numbers of zebra, and smaller numbers of Grant's gazelle, Thompson's gazelle, eland and impala. The herd in the Serengeti migration moves in an annual pattern which is fairly predictable. They are migrating throughout the year, constantly seeking fresh grazing and, it's now thought, better quality water. The precise timing of the Serengeti migration is entirely dependent upon the rainfall patterns each. See the best time to visit Serengeti wildebeest migration

This Serengeti wildebeest migration, is month by month

Where the grassis greener every year more than 1.5million Serengeti wildebeests, 600,000 serengeti zebras, serengeti gazelles, migrate in gigantic herd, describe a huge oblong as they migrate from south east part of Serengeti national park, northern to Tanzania. This is annual Serengeti migration is probably the greatest wild life spectacle on earth today. No one knows for sure what triggers the Serengeti migration; it’s something the animals know far better than we do. What’s certain is that the herds in the migration know that the grass is greener on the other side, and they know when and where.

Serengeti Migration /December to March

From early December ,the animals in the Serengeti migration are on the short grass plains in the southeast ,around Ndutu and Naabi gate ,where calving will take  place from late January to early February .About 80 per cent of the wildebeest females give birth at the same time ;within a two -week span. this is ensure that most of the calves will survive since the number  of new born and weakened or disadvantaged mothers who perish  will be enough to keep predators satisfied with food, giving the other calves in the herd enough time to gain strength and adapt to the world .

When the calves are just a few hours old, they can run as fast  as their parents and they start grazing before they are a week old .This means that there  is a sudden rise in the number of grazers, which quickly depletes the local food resources, forcing the herds to start looking for greener pasture in the north and west.

Serengeti migration /January through April
The waterholes still retain plentifully water from the shot rains of October/November into December. The plain are green and dotted with flowers. The old bones of predators' victims are obscured by hundreds of thousands of Serengeti migrating animals. The herds in the Serengeti migration remain dispersed as individuals or family units in the southeast plains, moving back and forth within the long rains, which usually begin in March, come to an end in late May or early June

Serengeti migration /May to June

This is when the Serengeti migration begins. As the dry season approaches in mid-May ,both the pasture and water in the southeastern Serengeti plain dry out .The animals respond to the new condition by forming into huge multitudes and begin migrating to north and west ,toward the northern border and toward Lake Victoria...
GOOD TIME FOR BALLOON SAFARI IT IS MASSIVE WHEN YOU DO IT!!!!!

The route of the animals in the Serengeti migration varies little from year to year. First; the animals traverse the alkaline lake Ndutu, the pour out into three major columns, along Simiyu River, then northwest along the Mbalangeti River and Seronera valley. The animals in the Serengeti migration move in long columns, often single file and usually following a leader, usually a mature bull. A file of these animals can be five to six kilometers long, an unforgettable memory for the observer.
A wide lens camera is helpfully here. As the movement gain momentum annual rutting and mating takes place. The adult Males establish territories perhaps only 30 meters across, by energetically scratching bare patches on the ground, and then defend them against other males. They try to keep a small group of females within their territories. The scene becomes confused as the survival imperative leads them toward grass and water while the productive imperative requires them to define individual territories and protect their reproductive rights within those territories. The one requires a mass movement, but the other tends toward the establishment of smaller groups, generally of individual males and their’ wives''

Serengeti migration/August to September
In case conditions are very good, meaning there is plenty of grass and water, the herds within the  Serengeti migration will be spread out all the way from Seronera to the Mara River and often spreading out across a broad front. Some of the animals within the Serengeti migration heads through Grumeti reserve and Ikorongo. Others north through the heart of the great Serengeti national Park

The Serengeti migration herds spread out across the northern Serengeti where the Mara River provides Serengeti migration with its most serious obstacle. This river gushes through the northern Serengeti. Watching the frantic herds of the wildebeest migration crossing the Mara River can be very spectacular, there are often scenes of great panic and confusion among the herds within the Serengeti migrations

Serengeti migration /November to December

When the November short rains start in north Serengeti, the animals in the Serengeti migration begin their trek back to the south. The herds in the migration leave the area by various routes in long columns, passing the Lobo area before arriving once again on the shorter grass plains that stretch from Seronera to the Ngorongoro highlands. The animals in the Serengeti migration arrive here in December when the long  rains are usually still on, and most of the wildebeests  females as one of the animals in the Serengeti migration give birth here in late January and early February.
